Happier Grocery — New York’s Answer to Erewhon

Happier Grocery — New York’s Answer to Erewhon

It turns out that back in late 2023, a truly unique grocery store opened in New York — one that can best be described as a “New York Erewhon”, referencing the cult Los Angeles-based chain known for its curated selection, sleek aesthetics, and devoted creative-class following.

Boutique Grocery

Located in southern SoHo, Happier Grocery is part of a new wave of boutique groceries — stores where product selection is treated with the same care and attention as a museum curates its exhibitions. Every shelf, every brand, every label is chosen with intention and design in mind.

The store positions itself as “grocer + lifestyle” — not just a place to shop, but a space where healthy eating, design, and cultural aesthetics intertwine. Alongside groceries, you’ll find a curated selection of merchandise, gift books, and home goods — a true concept store built around taste and style.

A Creative-Class Favorite

Unsurprisingly, Happier Grocery has become a go-to destination for New York’s creative community — designers, bloggers, photographers, editors, musicians, stylists, and actors. The space feels like it was designed for people who live and breathe aesthetics.

One of the co-founders, Wells Stellberger, previously worked as a designer at Marc Jacobs, and his influence is visible throughout: minimalist shelving, thoughtful branding, and a clean, gallery-like interior.

Space and Design

The interior design leans into cool tones, concrete, metal, and clean lines, creating a modern, industrial-luxe atmosphere.

The store spans two levels:

  • Ground floor — fresh produce, ready-to-eat foods, beverages, and a café bar.

  • Lower level — pantry items, ice cream, home goods, beauty, and household products.

Every corner is carefully considered to create a curated shopping experience — it’s not just about what you buy, but how you experience it.

Pricing and Philosophy

Happier Grocery doesn’t aim for accessibility or mass appeal — it’s a destination for those who view food as part of their lifestyle. Prices reflect that vision: many products feel like artifacts, and part of the value is the elevated experience itself.
