What’s Wrong with Central Park? The Most Absurd Ideas from Twitter

The internet proves once again: even iconic places can be “improved”… or at least debated about how to radically relocate them. On Twitter (or rather, X.com), a funny suggestion appeared — Central Park in New York would look much better if it were simply moved a bit to the left, closer to the Hudson River.

It may sound like a joke — but that was only the beginning. Commenters jumped in, and what followed was a true storm of urbanist (and not so urbanist) ideas.

1. Rotate the Park by 90°

“If we’re moving it, let’s rotate it too!” users suggested. In this new orientation, Central Park could connect the Hudson River and the East River — a long green corridor across all of Manhattan.

One reply in the comments was even better: “This place would be more class segregated than Buenos Aires.”

2. A Compromise: A Cross-Shaped Park

For those arguing whether the park should be shifted horizontally or vertically — a compromise emerged: make it cross-shaped. Debate settled, and the local Christians might be happy too.

3. Replace the Park with a Giant Pond

The next evolution of the idea — scrap the trees and lawns, and instead turn Central Park into a massive pond.

4. A Pond? No! A Giant Vat of Hot Coffee

Naturally, the idea evolved New York–style: forget the pond — let’s make it a giant vat of always fresh, hot coffee. Without a doubt, it would become the city’s main attraction.

5. Or What If We Flip Everything? Swap the City and the Park

A popular alternative: what if the city and the park swapped places? Then you’d have a small patch of city surrounded by parkland — sounds perfect! And surprisingly close to the original 17th-century layout.
