History of the FRIENDS™ Experience
The idea first emerged in 2019 when Warner Bros and OGX (Original X Productions) launched a pop-up exhibit in SoHo, New York, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Friends.” The installation became an instant hit — long lines wrapped around the block — proving the show’s enduring popularity. Due to its success, the organizers decided to make the project permanent. In 2020, they opened a permanent location at 130 East 23rd Street in the Flatiron District. Today, the show-themed exhibit is available in over 20 cities worldwide, including Brussels, Amsterdam, London, and Las Vegas.
Exhibits and Activities for Visitors
The FRIENDS™ Experience in New York spans two floors and features around 18 rooms, each dedicated to a specific location from the show:
- The fountain from the opening credits with a photo-op bench
- Monica and Rachel’s apartment — recreated in detail, including the kitchen, balcony, and front door
- Chandler and Joey’s apartment with their iconic recliners and Hugsy the plush penguin
- The Las Vegas wedding chapel for Ross and Rachel’s elopement
- Central Perk Café — open to the public without a ticket; serves coffee and pastries. In real life, the location of Central Perk is now home to The Little Owl restaurant, since 2006
There are also 25 original costumes and props on display, such as:
- Chandler’s bunny slippers
- Rachel’s cow print jacket
- Ross’s Holiday Armadillo costume
- Rachel’s full 18-page letter
- The characters’ wallets with IDs and credit cards

Famous “Friends” Locations in New York
Although most interior scenes were filmed in studios in Los Angeles, there are several iconic locations in NYC that fans consider part of the “Friends” universe.
- The Friends Apartment Building
This six-story building with a distinctive facade is shown throughout all 10 seasons as the home of Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler. Built in 1900, it contains 22 apartments and is one of the most recognizable pop culture landmarks. In reality, all apartments are two-bedroom units, and The Little Owl restaurant occupies the ground floor — not Central Perk. The building is privately owned and not open to the public, but the exterior is a popular photo spot.

- Central Park and the Fountain from the Intro
Although the show gives the impression that the intro scene was filmed at a Central Park fountain, it was actually shot on a soundstage. Still, many fans associate the show’s vibe with real fountains in Central Park, especially the Bethesda Fountain.
