History of The FRIENDS™ Experience in New York
The story of The Friends Experience began in 2019, when the TV series Friends celebrated its 25th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Warner Bros. and the company Superfly decided to create an interactive exhibition in New York dedicated to the show and its characters. The organizers wanted fans to do more than simply see familiar sets—they wanted them to step into their favorite scenes.
The exhibition, titled The One with the Pop-Up, opened on September 7, 2019, in SoHo and ran until October 6. It covered approximately 790 square meters (8,500 square feet) and featured more than 50 original props. Visitors could explore recreated versions of the characters’ apartments, take photos on the famous orange couch, and recreate other scenes from the series. At the end of the experience, a gift shop offered Friends-themed souvenirs.
The temporary exhibition proved so popular that the organizers decided to make it a permanent attraction. On March 17, 2021, The Friends Experience reopened at a new location: 130 East 23rd Street in the Flatiron District. The space covers approximately 1,580 square meters (17,000 square feet) across two floors. It features recreated sets, including the Central Perk café, as well as original props and a themed gift shop.
Over time, the project expanded beyond New York. The exhibition began traveling to other cities, including Toronto, London, Paris, Madrid, São Paulo, and Sydney. It later opened in Las Vegas, Seattle, Manila, and other cities as well.

The FRIENDS™ Experience in New York spans two floors and features around 18 rooms, each dedicated to a specific location from the show:
- The fountain from the opening credits with a photo-op bench
- Monica and Rachel’s apartment — recreated in detail, including the kitchen, balcony, and front door
- Chandler and Joey’s apartment with their iconic recliners and Hugsy the plush penguin
- The Las Vegas wedding chapel for Ross and Rachel’s elopement
- Central Perk Café — open to the public without a ticket; serves coffee and pastries. In real life, the location of Central Perk is now home to The Little Owl restaurant, since 2006
There are also 25 original costumes and props on display, such as:

Although most interior scenes were filmed in studios in Los Angeles, there are several iconic locations in NYC that fans consider part of the “Friends” universe.
- The Friends Apartment Building
This six-story building with a distinctive facade is shown throughout all 10 seasons as the home of Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler. Built in 1900, it contains 22 apartments and is one of the most recognizable pop culture landmarks. In reality, all apartments are two-bedroom units, and The Little Owl restaurant occupies the ground floor — not Central Perk. The building is privately owned and not open to the public, but the exterior is a popular photo spot.

Although the show gives the impression that the intro scene was filmed at a Central Park fountain, it was actually shot on a soundstage. Still, many fans associate the show’s vibe with real fountains in Central Park, especially the Bethesda Fountain.
