Cannabis Museum in New York (THC NYC)

Museums come in all shapes and sizes, and each has its own value. Beyond fine art, New York also offers museums with more playful or unconventional themes — including museums of sex, ice cream, and… cannabis.

History

The Cannabis Museum opened in April 2023 in the SoHo district. The choice of location couldn’t be more fitting — for many years, the scent of marijuana has already lingered around this very neighborhood.

The museum is also known as THC NYC, named after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the euphoric “high.”

Exhibits and Experiences

Spread across four floors, the Cannabis Museum offers primarily immersive and entertaining experiences:

  • a projection room that surrounds visitors with colorful visual effects,

  • a giant vinyl record–shaped platform where you can lie down and listen to iconic cannabis-inspired tracks,

  • high-quality and strikingly beautiful photographs of cannabis buds,

  • a greenhouse where visitors can see how marijuana is cultivated.

Cannabis itself cannot be consumed or purchased inside the museum. However, just around the corner, both are legally available. What the museum does offer is a wide range of creative merchandise and CBD-infused treats (CBD is a cannabis derivative that contains little to no THC).

In addition to attractions, the museum includes a gallery dedicated to social justice issues, particularly those related to cannabis prohibition and enforcement.
