The Japan Society in New York City is a serene and elegantly designed cultural hub dedicated to Japanese art, cultural exchange, and fostering connections between Japan and the United States. Beyond its gallery space, the building also houses a language center, library, a peaceful indoor garden, and a fountain.
History & Mission
Founded in 1907, the Japan Society’s mission has always been to promote Japanese culture in the United States and strengthen ties between the two nations.
Its origins trace back to a historic visit in May 1907, when two Japanese naval ships arrived in New York carrying Vice Admiral Goro Ijuin and General Baron Tamemoto Kuroki — heroes of the Russo-Japanese War. During a dinner in General Kuroki’s honor at the Astor Hotel on May 19, 1907, the Japan Society was officially established.
The organization paused its activities during World War II but resumed soon after. Today, it continues its mission from its cultural center located near the United Nations Headquarters at the corner of 47th Street and First Avenue.
Architecture & Spaces
The Japan Society is set against a backdrop of covered gardens, a reflective pool, and a cascading waterfall. Inside, visitors will find:
- а 260-seat theater,
- аn art gallery,
- а Japanese language center,
- a library,
- conference rooms.
The building was designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura and opened in 1971 — the first building in New York designed by a leading Japanese architect. The original elegance and simplicity of Yoshimura’s vision remain intact despite extensive renovations.
In 2017, to celebrate the Society’s 110th anniversary, acclaimed artist Hiroshi Sugimoto redesigned the lobby garden, incorporating handmade ceramic tiles from Nara, original artworks, and two large tropical bonsai ficus trees.
