Madison Square Garden (MSG) is one of the most famous arenas in the world, located in New York City and accommodating around 20,000 spectators. This multi-purpose complex serves as a home arena for several sports teams and a premier venue for concerts and world-class events.
History
Throughout its history, Madison Square Garden has gone through four different incarnations.
The first arena was built in 1879 on the northeast corner of Madison Square, named after the fourth U.S. President, James Madison. It was demolished in 1890 and replaced by a covered complex.
The second Madison Square Garden opened in 1890, followed by a third in 1925, located in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. The area earned its name due to high crime rates, making it one of New York City’s most dangerous districts from the mid-19th century to the late 1980s.
Since 1968, the current Madison Square Garden has been located above Pennsylvania Station, between 31st and 33rd Streets on Eighth Avenue.

Sports Events
MSG has hosted numerous NHL, NBA, and WNBA All-Star Games, as well as NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals. Today, it serves as the home arena for the New York Rangers (NHL) and the New York Knicks (NBA).
MSG is also considered the birthplace of professional wrestling and a longtime home for WWE. Iconic events like WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble have taken place here. Wrestling legends such as Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and John Cena have all had historic matches at the Garden.
In addition, Madison Square Garden has been the stage for some of the greatest boxing matches in history, featuring Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, and Lennox Lewis. The legendary “Fight of the Century” between Ali and Frazier in 1971 took place right here.
The arena also hosts MMA events (UFC and Bellator), as well as tournaments in tennis, gymnastics, martial arts, and other sports.

Concerts and Shows
Given its fame, it’s no surprise that MSG has hosted performances by the world’s biggest stars.
Legends such as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, and Lady Gaga have all performed here.
While primarily known for sports and concerts, the Garden has also staged large-scale theatrical productions, including:
- Radio City Christmas Spectacular – One of America’s most iconic holiday shows, traditionally held at MSG, featuring the legendary Rockettes and dazzling stage effects that immerse audiences in festive magic.
- The Wizard of Oz Live (1997) – A spectacular stage adaptation of the classic film, complete with modern special effects and a live orchestra. The production drew thousands of spectators and became one of the largest theatrical shows in MSG history.
- Disney on Ice – Annual ice shows where skaters dressed as beloved Disney characters reenact scenes from classic films. A family favorite, it remains one of the arena’s most popular attractions.
