Overstory: Bar with a View of New York

New York is a fascinating city to look at from above. You can buy a $23 ticket to the Museum of the City of New York, where a miniature New York exhibition is currently on display… or you can buy a $25 cocktail at Overstory and enjoy a stunning view of New York from the bar’s circular open terrace located on the 64th floor of a skyscraper.

It seems that Overstory is truly a must-see for anyone who loves New York. The bar is located at 70 Pine St, a building that, at the time of its construction, was the third tallest in the world (after the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building). Its lobby is considered one of the most richly decorated Art Deco interiors in New York.

The space where the bar is located used to be part of a six-story penthouse owned by Henry Doherty, the magnate who built 70 Pine Street. Back in 1932, his penthouse already included a gym and a squash court.

But the most curious feature was Henry’s bed: it was installed on a motorized platform that could roll along rails from the bedroom directly onto an open terrace. The idea was that Doherty could sleep outdoors at a height of 290 meters above Lower Manhattan — literally among the clouds.

Today, Overstory is ranked among the 50 Best Bars in the World and is No. 6 in North America.

From the bar, you can freely step out (drink in hand!) onto the circular open observation terrace, which offers incredible views of Midtown, Brooklyn, and the neighboring Downtown skyscrapers — not to mention views of New Jersey and Queens.
