Seagull: True Story in New York

Seagull: True Story in New York

Alexander Molochnikov’s production Seagull: True Story is like a true New York phenomenon: it first appeared at La MaMa, then traveled around the world, including London. And, as often happens with successful hits, has now returned back, this time to the legendary stage of the Public Theater.

The Public Theater is one of the city’s most prestigious off-Broadway theaters. It’s famous for its Shakespeare in the Park project: every summer, Shakespeare plays are performed for free in New York’s Central Park. It’s also the theater where the musical Hamilton was first staged in 2015.

In the story, the young director Molochnikov (playing a character named Kon) stages The Seagull, cleverly blending autobiographical drama with sharp political satire and classic Chekhovian themes.

If you haven’t seen The Seagull yet, I envy you — because you have a great chance to experience it for the first time. It’s not only an ironic and at times very funny performance, but also a powerful and moving story about the present day: about censorship, emigration, artistic freedom, and what happens to theater when life begins to interfere with art.
