Urs Fischer Exhibition at Salon 94 Gallery

It’s amazing when galleries can match classic museums in the quality of their exhibitions and programming. In New York, such spaces are quite common, and one of them is Salon 94.

The gallery is located right across from the Guggenheim Museum. Currently, it is hosting an exhibition by Urs Fischer, where his furniture is being presented for the first time, making the show even more intriguing.

About Salon 94

The gallery was founded by Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn — one of the most influential figures in New York’s art world. A gallerist, curator, art dealer, and art consultant, she works with clients such as Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Jeanne grew up surrounded by art — her father, Roy Greenberg, was a well-known lawyer and collector.

Salon 94 became one of the first galleries in New York where furniture created by artists was presented as a full-fledged artistic statement. Here, the line between art object and functional design is intentionally blurred.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you might remember a similar approach at Carpenters Workshop Gallery.

Who Is Urs Fischer?

He is the artist behind the famous sculpture Big Clay No. 4, which first stood in New York and then, for several years, adorned Bolotnaya Embankment in Moscow. He is often called an “imperfectionist” — a master who turns imperfection into an artistic philosophy.

At Fischer’s exhibition, viewers are invited to decide for themselves: what is furniture and what is irony. The boundaries are so blurred that the internal dialogue about the criteria of art becomes part of the exhibition.

The Main Element of the Exhibition — The Golden Curtain

On the top floor, visitors will find an installation that can be considered the highlight of the show. It is a golden curtain: suspended drops hanging from the ceiling, handcrafted in Venice. It captivates at first glance and photographs beautifully.

Pro tip: Take photos around 4 p.m., when the soft evening light reflects off the golden droplets.
