Privacy Policy

NYC Museum Atlas is an iPhone app made by the editors of NYC-MAP.COM. This page explains exactly what the app records, what it sends to our server, and how to have it removed.
The short version
- There is no account, no sign-up and no password.
- We never ask for your name, email address or payment details.
- There are no ads, no third-party analytics and no tracking SDKs of any kind.
- Your location is used on your iPhone only. It is never sent to us.
- The places you mark are stored on your device and also sent to our server under a random identifier that is not connected to you personally.
What the app stores on your iPhone
The following is kept locally, in the app's own storage:
- The places you mark as Visited, Interested or Hidden.
- Your filter settings — category, price, day of the week and so on.
- A cached copy of the place listings, so the app opens without waiting for the network.
- A random identifier created the first time you open the app (see below).
Deleting the app removes all of it from your device.
The random install identifier
The first time you open the app it generates a random identifier — a string of digits and letters with no meaning, created on your device. It is not your Apple ID, not your device's serial number, and not Apple's advertising identifier. We cannot use it to learn who you are.
If you delete the app and install it again, a new identifier is created and the old one is no longer associated with anything you do.
What is sent to our server

Being straightforward about this: our own administrators can open a list of these random identifiers and see which places a given identifier has marked and which filters it uses. The identifier carries no name, email address or contact detail, so we have no way to connect it to a person — but it is more than a purely aggregate count, and you should know that.
Nothing else is sent. The app has no field where you could type personal information, because there is nothing in it to sign up for.
Location
If you allow it, the app uses your location while you are using it, to show which places are near you and to start directions. Your coordinates stay on your iPhone — they are not transmitted to our server and we do not store them. You can refuse the permission and the app still works; the map simply will not centre on you.
Choosing “Directions” hands the destination to Apple Maps, which is governed by Apple's privacy policy, not ours.
iCloud
Your labels and filter settings are also written to your own iCloud storage, so they follow you to another iPhone signed in with the same Apple ID. That copy lives in your iCloud account under Apple's terms; we cannot read it. The random install identifier is deliberately excluded and stays on the one device.
Server logs
Like any website, our server records ordinary web-server logs when the app requests listings or photographs — the IP address making the request, the time and the file requested. These are standard hosting logs used for security and troubleshooting, and they are not linked to your random identifier or to the places you mark.
Children
The app is a museum guide intended for a general audience. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Deleting your data
On your device: delete the app. Everything stored locally goes with it. To clear the iCloud copy, remove the app's data in iOS Settings under your Apple ID.
On our server: write to www@nyc-map.com and we will delete the records held under your identifier. Because the identifier is the only thing tying those records together, please include it in the message — you will find it in the app under the Me tab.

Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Substantive changes will be noted on this page rather than made quietly.
