The Book of Mormon — Broadway musical

Our correspondent Waso shares a review of a Broadway musical:

Let’s be honest: sometimes in life you come across things you experience once and they stay with you forever — iconic movies, unforgettable music videos, even cities or natural wonders (like the Grand Canyon in Arizona or the Big Sur drive in California).

English has the perfect phrase for it: must-see. In Russian, for some reason, what comes to mind is «see it and die». A long prelude to this point…

The Book of Mormon is love at first sight: the kind of instant, electric connection that feels a lot like watching Ace Ventura on VHS for the first time back in the ’90s.

It’s one of the most decorated and long-running shows on Broadway, playing nonstop since 2011. It’s not just outrageously funny — it’s also fearless. You’ll enjoy it twice as much if you’re an atheist, and three times as much if off-color jokes don’t bother you.

Imagine South Park staged as a Broadway musical. Which makes perfect sense, because Matt Stone and Trey Parker are behind both the TV show and the musical.

The plot: Mormon missionaries (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), dressed in ties and crisp white shirts, are sent to a remote village in Uganda to convert the local residents. The villagers live in extreme poverty and suffer from attacks by local warlord-type generals. From there, things spiral quickly — and no one is spared. Absolutely no one.
