The Museum of Broadway

The Museum of Broadway is one of the most significant cultural landmarks not only for New York City but for America as a whole. This is more than just a place about theatre — it shows how Broadway has shaped Manhattan’s development and contributed to New York’s cultural identity over the course of three centuries.

History

The Museum of Broadway was founded by theater producer Julie Boardman, with support from AIDS relief foundations, the New York Public Library, and various theater organizations. Its opening was originally scheduled for 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The museum finally opened to the public in 2022.

Collections and Exhibits

The Museum of Broadway traces over 300 years of Broadway history — from the earliest stage productions to today’s hit shows. The collection includes costumes, props, and original set pieces from more than 500 productions. Visitors can explore rare artifacts, interactive installations, and stories of legendary plays and musicals that have shaped the world of theater.

The museum features several dedicated zones:

  • Map Room — an immersive gallery showcasing Broadway’s migration from the Financial District to its modern home at Times Square.

  • Timeline — a chronological journey through Broadway’s history, highlighting landmark productions and the theater’s role in social progress.

  • Making of a Broadway Show — a behind-the-scenes look at how productions are created, from rehearsals to stagecraft, along with insights into the lives of actors.

In addition to permanent displays, the museum hosts special events that spotlight iconic Broadway figures. There is also a fully equipped Broadway-style rehearsal studio available for rentals — whether for performances, lectures, or private gatherings.
