Ophelia Lounge Bar

Ophelia Lounge | A Stylish Rooftop Cocktail Bar and Lounge in Midtown East

True New Yorkers don’t go to observation decks to enjoy the city views — they go to bars where the skyline is just as spectacular. Here’s a real gem:

Ophelia Lounge is a stylish rooftop cocktail bar and lounge in Midtown East, just north of the United Nations Headquarters.

The bar is famous for its panoramic views of Manhattan, best enjoyed from the terrace designed as a 360-degree “greenhouse” with floor-to-ceiling windows and cozy velvet banquettes.

Looking south toward First Avenue — the tall skyscraper on the left hides the United Nations building.

Looking west — The interior of Ophelia hints at the venue’s past grandeur, but its slightly retro 1990s vibe adds a certain charm, making it feel less like a tourist spot and more like a hidden local hangout. As a bonus, it still keeps to the old-school standard from a time when high-floor public venues didn’t have to be completely enclosed with glass or fencing, as is now the case with most observation decks.

The history of the place goes back to 1928, when the tower opened as the Panhellenic Tower — the first hotel run by women, serving as a social club for women moving to New York for work. Later, it became home to the legendary Top of the Tower bar, frequented by celebrities including Frank Sinatra.
