If you thought this was an early work by artist Jaume Plensa (I wrote about him recently), this photograph is actually much older.
The photo is titled “Unpacking the Statue of Liberty in New York, 1885.”
The Statue of Liberty was shipped from France to the United States in pieces. It arrived packed in approximately 214 crates containing 350 individual parts. The French ship Isère reached New York on June 17, 1885, and after more than a year of assembly, the completed statue was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886.
To put its scale into perspective, the Statue of Liberty’s face alone is about 16.5 feet (5 meters) tall, while its nose measures 4.5 feet (1.37 meters) in length.
