Riverview Cafeteria at the United Nations Headquarters in New York

The heart of global politics is, of course, the United Nations Headquarters in New York. And since every great institution has a place to eat, here is something you do not usually get to see: photos of the United Nations’ only employee cafeteria.

The cafeteria follows the classic salad bar and hot bar concept — a self-service buffet where you choose and serve whatever you like.

There are two relatively modest serving lines with a selection of hot and cold dishes, along with soups, desserts, and snacks.

Prices: $12.65 per pound ($27.89 per kilogram), and $5.70 for a slice of carrot cake or any other dessert. That is slightly cheaper than similar buffets, such as those at Whole Foods, where food is typically priced at $14–15 per pound.

The best part of the cafeteria is its spacious, bright dining hall, with access to a large outdoor terrace overlooking the East River and the waterfronts of Queens and Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, Riverview Cafeteria is not accessible during public tours of the United Nations Headquarters. However, United Nations employees are allowed to invite guests there for lunch.
