Free Ticket Giveaway at the Metropolitan Opera in New York

New York has decided that opera should be accessible not only to Upper West Side residents.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a giveaway of 70,000 free tickets to the Metropolitan Opera in New York. That is roughly enough to fill an entire football stadium with opera-goers. And together with Lincoln Center, the city now plans to hold this giveaway every year.

The Metropolitan Opera in New York (or The Met, as locals call it) is the leading and most prestigious opera house in the United States and one of the world’s leading musical theaters. Although it has existed since 1883, the company moved to its current building at Lincoln Center relatively recently, in 1966.

The most interesting rule is that the free ticket will only be available to people who have not purchased tickets to the Metropolitan Opera since 2019 (sorry, most of my readers — this lottery will be without you).

Starting this month, the Metropolitan Opera will give away 10,000 tickets every month throughout the 2026–2027 season. That is about 10% of all tickets for the season.

It is hard to disagree with the idea that “Art should not be accessible only to those who can afford it” and that “Economic justice is access to the things that make city life worth living,” both of which appear in the press release. But it is also worth noting that regular tickets at the Met officially start at $25. More than 30,000 tickets at that price point have been allocated for the 2026–2027 season. More than one-third of all seats cost less than $100.

In May, City Hall already held a trial run: it gave away 1,000 tickets to football matches in New York. Winners paid $50 instead of the usual $220–$415.
