It turns out that the famous image of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt blowing up was filmed in Midtown Manhattan, specifically on the southwest corner of Lexington Avenue and East 52nd Street, in front of 590 Lexington Avenue.
On the night of September 15, 1954, the crew of The Seven Year Itch was filming there. According to the popular story, a passing (6) train beneath the subway grate created the gust of air that lifted Monroe’s white dress. In reality, the effect was most likely produced by powerful fans installed beneath the grate.
There is one detail that is often left out: the iconic photographs were indeed taken in New York City, but the version of the scene that appears in the finished film was later reshot on a Hollywood soundstage. The original street shoot attracted such a massive crowd that filming became impossible.
